I was talking to Wenshing one day and she asked if I was interested to know more about her project and here goes.

I ripped this off from the booklet. Red Tears brings us to a space that captures the beauty and essence of the human spirit, touching our lives through the passage of time. It portrays an interesting interplay of cultural collision in terms of values, beliefs, and contemporary practice and shows how these conflicting ideas and forms can be interweaved to co-exist in our present society.

I am very happy to  meet Danny who is the artistic director and choreographer for this dance. It is a piece of rather personal interpretation and inspiration. A combination of original and contemporary moves with Chinese texts and Teochew opera. Kinda reminds me of my Fading Tradition project huh?

Okay really, what does this have to do with androgyny? On stage or in theatre, it is not about gender but characters. But it is still true, characters can be feminine or masculine but not necessary female or male. There is this air of being anonymous on stage.

 The emphasis of a single look on stage, ah, that’s impressive. The idea of a feminine touch or a masculine stare. It’s just a split second, about the passing moment. The idea of gender is almost ambiguous on stage. I’m trying to say that it may be true the characters have a gender but it’s not just about being male or female. Stage gives a variety of approaches to the gender. Yes.

I must say it is amazing to portray a different character on stage. It may be fun or interesting but it’s definitely not easy. To settle down and calm down and sink into a total different. How sure can you be? It’s a lil haunting, no?

Is there a gender difference in response to color? Although findings are ambiguous, many investigations have indicated that there are differences between gender in preferences for colors. Early investigations done by by Guilford (1934) on the harmony of color combinations found that a person is likely to see balance in colors that are closely related or the opposite. Guilford also found some evidence that more pleasing results were obtained from either very small or very large differences in hue rather than medium differences, with this tendency more frequent in women than men.

A review of color studies done by Eysenck in early 1940′s notes the following results to the relationship between gender and color. Dorcus (1926) found yellow had a higher affective value for the men than women and St. George (1938) maintained that blue for men stands out far more than for women. An even earlier study by Jastrow (1897) found men preferred blue to red and women red to blue. Eysenck’s study, however, found only one gender difference with yellow being preferred to orange by women and orange to yellow by men. This finding was reiforced later by Birren (1952) who found men preferred orange to yellow; while women placed orange at the bottom of the list.

Guilford and Smith (1959) found men were generally more tolerant toward achromatic colors than women. Thus, Guilford and Smith proposed that women might be more color-concious and their color tastes more flexible and diverse. Likewise, McInnis and Shearer (1964) found that blue green was more favored among women than men, and women preferred tints more than shades. They also found 56% of men and 76% of women preferred cool colors, and 51% men and 45% women chose bright colors. In a similar study, Plater (1967) found men had a tendency to prefer stronger chromas than women.

And we have already discussed in class, the idea/notion of pink and blue. Is there a colour for androgyny? If the girls try to dress like boys to be androgynous, they will dress is the boys colours and vice versa, is that it? Or just keep it absolutely unisex, black and white. But it’s really all about stereotypes isn’t it?

It was that tough choosing a topic for myself. I wanted something very modern, with background. If I want it, throw in some fashion and style, and maybe lifestyle. And so while I was walking down the streets, doing my own thing, it just struck me. Androgyny will be nice. And so here goes!

Let’s start with the lowest level. This is what wikipedia gave me. Haha.

Androgyny is a term derived from the Greek words ανήρ (anér, meaning man) and γυνή (gyné, meaning woman)[1] that can refer to either of two related concepts about gender: the mixing of masculine and feminine characteristics, as in fashion statements; or the balance of “anima and animus” in psychoanalytic theory.

Androgyne

Androgyne derives from two Greek words, but makes its first appearance as a compound word in Rabbinic Judaism (see, e.g., Genesis Rabba 8.1; Leviticus Rabba 14.1), most probably as an alternative to the Greek Pagan-related usage of hermaphrodite.

The Online Etymology Dictionary dates its appearance in English to 1552[1], although it is sometimes[specify] (incorrectly) claimed to have been coined by Sandra Bem, who helped to popularise the concept.

An androgyne in terms of gender identity, is a person who does not fit cleanly into the typical masculine and feminine gender roles of their society. They may also use the term ambigender to describe themselves. Many androgynes identify as being mentally “between” woman and man, or as entirely genderless. They may class themselves as non-genderedgenderneutralagendered, between genders, Intergenderedbigendered or,genderfluid[citation needed]

Androgyne was once used as a synonym for hermaphrodite, a term since replaced by the word intersex[citation needed].

Sandra Bem’s work on androgyny preceded the current widespread use of the term as a gender identity, and uses the term more in terms of character traits than core gender identity. She considers an androgynous balance of traits to be desirable, stating that those who are able to draw on both traditionally masculine and feminine emotions and behaviours are best able to cope with life’s challenges in a well-rounded way.

[edit]The Bem Sex Role Inventory

The Bem Sex Role Inventory is one of the most widely used gender measures and was constructed by the early leading proponent of androgyny, Sandra Bem (1977).[2] Based on their responses to the items in the Bem Sex-Role Inventory, individuals are classified as having one of four gender-role orientations: masculine, feminine, androgynous, or undifferentiated.

The androgynous individual is simply a female or male who has a high degree of both feminine (expressive) and masculine (instrumental) traits. A feminine individual is high on feminine (expressive) traits and low on masculine (instrumental) traits. A masculine female is high on instrumental traits and low on expressive traits. An undifferentiated person is low on both feminine and masculine traits.[2]

According to Sandra Bem, androgynous men and women are more flexible and more mentally healthy than either masculine or feminine individuals; undifferentiated individuals are less competent.[2] To some degree, though, context influences which gender role is most adaptive. In close relationships, a feminine or androgynous gender role may be more desirable because of the expressive nature of close relationships. However, a masculine or androgynous gender role may be more desirable in academic and work settings because of their demands for action and assertiveness.

One study found that masculine and androgynous individuals had higher expectations for being able to control the outcomes of their academic efforts than feminine or undifferentiated individuals.[3]

Traits

Androgynous traits are those that either have no gender value, or have some aspects generally attributed to the opposite gender. Physiologicalandrogyny (compare intersex), which deals with physical traits, is distinct from behavioral androgyny which deals with personal and social anomalies in gender, and from psychological androgyny, which is a matter of gender identity.[citation needed]

To say that a culture or relationship is androgynous is to say that it lacks rigid gender roles and that the people involved display characteristics or partake in activities traditionally associated with the other gender. The term androgynous is often used to refer to a person whose look or build make determining their gender difficult but is generally not used as a synonym for actual intersexualitytransgender or two-spirit people. Occasionally, people who do not actually define themselves as androgynes adapt their physical appearance to look androgynous. This outward androgyny has been used as a fashion statement, and some of the milder forms (women wearing men’s trousers/men wearing skirts, for example) are not perceived astransgendered behavior.

Lesbians who do not define themselves as butch or femme may identify with various other labels including androgynous or andro for short. A few other examples include lipstick lesbiantomboy, and ‘tom suay’ which is Thai for ‘beautiful butch’. Some lesbians reject gender performativity labels altogether and resent their imposition by others. Note that androgynous and butch are often considered equivalent definitions, though less so in the butch/femme scene.

The recently coined word genderqueer is often used to refer to androgynes, but the terms genderqueer and androgyne (or androgynous) are neither equivalent nor interchangeable.Genderqueer is not specific to androgynes, does not denote gender identity, and may refer to any person, cisgender or transgender, whose behavior falls outside conventional gender norms. Furthermore, genderqueer, by virtue of its linkage with queer culture, carries sociopolitical connotations that androgyne does not carry. For these reasons, some androgynes may find the label genderqueer inaccurate, inapplicable, or offensive.

An androgyne may be attracted to people of any sex or gender, though many identify as pansexual or asexual. Terms such as bisexualheterosexual, and homosexual have less meaning for androgynes who do not identify as men or women to begin with. Infrequently the words gynephilia and androphilia are used, which refer to the gender of the person someone is attracted to, and do not imply any particular gender on the part of the person who is feeling the attraction.

Increasing numbers of children in the United States and other modernized countries such as Sweden are being raised to behave in androgynous ways. But traditional gender roles continue to dominate the cultures of many countries around the world.[4]

Many musical movements have embraced an androgynous theme. For example, the genres of glam rocknew wavegoth rock, and no wave often feature male acts sporting an androgynous look. Similarly, the Visual Kei movement of Japan often includes an androgynous look in its style.

More recently, British musician Elly Jackson from duo La Roux is an example of a female performer using an androgynous style. She is quoted as saying that she has had the style since her early teens and was often bullied in school as a result. Despite apparent obstacles during childhood, her use of androgyny has helped make her a success.

[edit]Anime and manga

Androgynous characters are readily apparent in anime and manga, possibly due to the concept of beautifully feminine boys known as bishōnen and biseinen, which are a form of Moe. Also, transsexual or crossdressing characters are relatively common when compared to Western media. Bishounenism is not as popular as it was in the 70s, when long haired, skinny androgynous men were the norm for basically all main and secondary characters. Further on the moe of biseinen; effeminately gorgeous villains are very common in both shoujo, shounen anime, and manga (a very good example of such a villain in the Western culture is David Bowie’s Jareth the Goblin King in the 1986 fantasy film Labyrinth).
