design manifesto

There are such things as good design and bad design. The sense of design does exist. Personal preference can be a way to avoid conflicts and arguments. But if every design is considered good as proclaimed by each of their designers, then every design is already perfect; you do whatever you want to, and that is all to it. But you know that is not true, because the sense of design lingers.

Good design is as little design as possible. Simplicity is not insufficient, it highlights and concentrates on the essential details. Having it simple, the design’s intentions can come across much stronger and clearer, which in turn, be successful in its functionality. The idea is to deliver substance and not ornament.

A good design should be specific. It needs not be fancy to perform in all sorts of possible functions but good in its primary task. When it works, the design is successful. If it did fail in one of its many tasks, it will be remembered as a bad design. A good design should not be weighed down by its sub-standard functions. Designers solve problems not raise more questions.

A design is successful when it is better than the previous. Designers should actively seek new answers for old questions. As long as a design is considered not good enough or not beautiful enough, designers will have something to do. Design should be about making improvements and attempt in making it timeless. It did not fail when the design is not noticed but did make it easier for the audience. The design may be subtle but nonetheless important.

In a good design, every detail has to be thought through thoroughly. Down to the last detail, it has to be designed. There should be no unnecessary aspects to a design. The design should be able clarify its structure, may it be via visual hierarchy or infographics. Ideally, the design should be self-explanatory. All details should be designed to make it easier for its audience.
